Coaches are always looking for the best ways to give their players an advantage to score. Having a full arsenal of set plays for specific situations in your team’s offensive attack, gives you an opportunity to get your best players the ball – in the positions they need to be in to be successful.

In this highly valuable instructional coaching video that is jam-packed with set plays and offensive strategies to make them successful, Jeff Boals unveils his go-to portfolio of set plays designed for a wide-array of key, in-game scenarios! Coach Boals explains the intricacies of each play and what makes them successful – followed by a coaching lesson plan, as you watch the collegiate coach teach players to run it during on-the-court demonstrations.Boals doesn’t waste a second of this video – deep-diving and demonstrating game-tested plays that will help your offense score more points next season, including...

  • Flex variations.
  • Floppy variations.
  • Box set variations.
  • Plays to run for all five offense positions.
  • Baseline out-of-bounds plays (BLOBs).
  • Sideline out-of-bounds plays (SLOBs).

Half-Court Set Plays

Coach Boals kicks things off by discussing the importance of identifying your best players and how to best utilize their skill-set. This exercise helps you to design plays that fit your players strengths and give them, and your team, more good-shot opportunities to score. Explaining why his teams run set plays about 75% of the time on offense, Coach Boals backs up his coaching philosophy by listing key statistics that his teams strive to achieve each season. He details the important attributes that make any play successful, including ball reversals, paint touches and post touches, explaining how each facet increases an offense’s points-per-possession metric.

Jumping into the set plays, Coach Boals provides multiple sets and counters against man-to-man defense. Each play contains three to four counters from the same alignment, making it extremely difficult for any opponent to scout your offense during the season.

Another advantage of using the same alignment for different plays is that it helps your players to retain the information. Boals explains that each play call contains the actions that the players will run. The ‘Twelve Series,’ for example, starts in a Floppy Set formation and provides scoring opportunities around the perimeter and block area, including a terrific lob option.

Coach Boals then dives into one of many counters on display in this video, ‘Twelve Flat,’ which is the initial play set up followed by a flat step-up screen. The utilization of cue words within the play calls, allow players to quickly recall the actions they must use to execute the play. Boals also gives you multiple pick-and-roll plays, with counter options. The play ‘Hip’ gets your players looking at the rim – for possible post-ups opportunities or wide open jump shots. The multiple counters on display are included to manipulate the help-side defense into trying to take away the help on the pick-and-roll action.

The ‘Nevada’ and ‘Fist’ Wheel Series provide any type of shot you may need for any scenario. Coach Boals also explains how ‘Fist Wheel’ can be used as side out-of-bounds play. Both series have a total of nine different variations and counters!

Plays for 3-Point Shots and Zone Plays

Coaches are always looking for more options or a specific set-play that’s designed to get a great look at a 3-point shot for their best shooters. Coach Boals gives you an inside-look at three sets that not only force the defense into difficult defending decisions, but also provides attacking looks at the rim inside, as well as open 3-point shot opportunities.

It doesn’t stop there! Boals also demonstrates five zone-busting set plays – culminating in a continuity offense that utilizes ball-screens. It is a simple continuity, but as he explains, ‘simplicity does not equal unproductivity.’

Coach Boals explains how these zone-busting alignments create problems for a 2-3 zone, as he positions his offensive players in the weak spots of the zone and allows them to aggressively try to make plays. Two other zone sets are specific to a 1-3-1 zone – with the offensive players positioned in the weak areas of the 1-3-1 – creating excellent two-on-one scenarios.

Out-of-Bounds Plays

To round out the video, Coach Boals delves into baseline and sideline out-of-bounds plays. Whether you need a play for a late clock lob to the rim, or a quick three-pointer, you’ll find a play for it in this section!

Two sideline out-of-bounds plays that Coach Boals picked up while attending NBA practices are sure to create opportunities when your team needs it the most. And just when you think you have had enough set plays, Boals shares one final, and fantastic, half-court set play out of a ‘Horns’ alignment that he’s successfully used many times with his own teams in recent seasons.

All coaches need set plays and even the best offensive teams need to refresh their playbooks from time to time. This jam-packed video allows you the perfect opportunity to turbo-charge your team’s playbook next season.

Coach Rating: 5 Out of 5 Stars. Great set plays! Coach Boals spends a good time discussing many aspects of the plays he is demonstrating on the court with players. It’s easy to follow and the plays are terrific.’
