Great shooters are developed in the off-season. They are developed when no one is watching and when there is no one in the stands. A player cannot develop or improve his or her outside shot without a good routine, confidence and building consistency in their shot.

In this highly valuable, on-the-court instructional video, Baron outlines his philosophy on skill development, the importance of proper shooting technique and the warmup routines and daily shooting drills he’s used to develop some of the best basketball players in the world as well as players at all levels of the game.

Shooting Philosophy & Warmups

To begin the video, Baron talks about the importance of consistency when it comes to shooting the basketball. He believes that a consistent warmup is a critically important part of any practice routine and is key for maintaining great balance and strength as a shooter. He shows viewers how he has incorporated resistance bands as part of a lower body warmup regimen.

Part of this warmup also includes a routine of shooting close-range shots around the inside of the key. Baron stresses that no matter where a player shoots from, the routine and form used should always be consistent. The coach also provides must-see information about why it is best to miss off the back of the rim so that players mentally commit to each shot – and guarantee to never have a shot attempt fall short.Baron then showcases a terrific section on shooting form and using proper technique – beginning with teaching shooters how to build their footwork. Coach Baron outlines the key questions that should always be asked of players during the shooting phase of skill development; such as:

  • Where are your feet located and landing?
  • How is your follow through?
  • Where are your shoulders facing? The answer to each of those questions become evident to viewers as Baron reveals his workout routine – with each serving as a key element in stressing technique and consistency when shooting the basketball – which is essential to help coaches to build fluid shooters.

Daily Shooting Drills

Next, Baron shows off several drills that he uses regularly as part of his daily workout when working with players to improve shooting. The coach emphasizes the importance of shooting closer and inside the three-point line before making a progression toward shooting threes.

Starting with spot form shooting around the rim, Baron focuses on having shooters make swishes every time they shoot. This concept helps players focus on the little details – things such as targeting the back of the rim and keeping the feet forward - and allows a shooter’s shot to be fluid from the inside out.

According to Baron, once players are loose and have their same shooting routine down, they can now move on to the next key aspect of shooting, such as coming off of screens and getting the proper footwork down so that it’s automatic.

In the ‘Progressions For Curl Drill,’ players work on concepts like being deceptive as they work to get open for a quick shot, changing their speed, working to draw contact and getting open and creating separation. He also covers other important shooting skills such as how to come off curl screens and fade screens in any half-court offense.

This is a must-see video for coaches at all levels of basketball, as Baron lays the groundwork for helping coaches build better shooters!

Coach Rating: 5 Out Of 5 Stars. ‘I love the breakdown that Coach Baron uses to teach shooting form and technique. The way he keeps teaching shooting form is simple and will help build confidence in your shooters.’
