Coaching Philosophy Development

Learning from one of the smartest skill development trainers in the world is something special.  Ganon shares a lot of information that will help you build your coaching philosophy.  From creating a fun atmosphere and keeping players engaged to learning how to communicate so your players can grasp the concept and apply it to their game, these ‘culture concepts’ will make things easier for you to relate to all of your players.  Coach Baker will teach you the 5 C’s of communication (clarity, charisma, competence, consistency, and confidence) and why they are important.  You will absorb many valuable coaching nuggets to your own philosophy just by listening to Ganon Baker!

Change of Pace/Direction

On the court, Ganon Baker uses many different pieces of equipment to get the most out of his players.  With tennis balls, Ganon uses these to train players’ change of pace and direction; this makes ‘regular’ ball handling drills more fun and engaging by taking it to a new level.  In finishing drills,Coach Baker uses a tennis ball as a way for players to finish with one hand and make a deceptive move to get to the rim.  This is a great drill to work on regular finishes, the Nash finish, or the Curry finish and work to protect the basketball while holding the tennis ball with your opposite hand.

Closeout Reads

Being able to read a defender flying at you is important for any great offensive player.  Coach Baker demonstrates 3 great closeout drills you can use to train your players what to do when a player closes out short, flies past you, and closes out hard right or hard left.  In 1v1 into 2v0, offense dribbles into the paint and makes a decision based on the defense - do I finish at the rim or look for the kickout.  In Closeout Reads, players get a pass from the coach or a defender and must quickly read how they closeout and then react to their closeout.

Ball Screen Reads

Ball screens are incorporated in every offense.  Whether it is just isolating someone on the wing or getting a ball handler coming off of a step up screen, players need to know how to read defenders and ball screen coverage.  Ganon demonstrates how players should attack a hard show, soft show, drop, jam and ice coverage.  With each coverage players will learn to attack the lead defender, create space, and look for a scoring opportunity.

Ganon Baker has trained the best in the NBA, WNBA, and around the world at all levels of play.  His teaching of the game has helped players become the best versions of themselves both on and off the court.  In this on court video, Ganon demonstrates how players can read the defense and react to what is given to them.  Quick decisions and attacking the basket are among what your players can learn from one of the best teachers in the game today!

Xx minutes.  2023.
