Oklahoma women's basketball - under the leadership of Coach Jennie Baranczyk - has become one of the premier programs in the country.  With back to back 20+ winning seasons and 2 trips to the NCAA Tournament under their belt, they are in the hunt for bigger and better things at the season's end.  This Open Practice 'inside look' into Baranczyk's program and practice session is outstanding - and it starts with the details done in the offseason!

Learning how to cut, looking at different scoring options within your offense, and knowing where your teammate is going to be are all the little things Baranczyk emphasizes in her offseason workouts.  In this open practice video, you get a front row seat into an information-loaded, summer practice session.

Shell Drill

Beginning with defensive pressure, Coach Baranczyk will take you through the details she wants her players to know when guarding the ball and protecting the post.  Working on backside exchanges, skip passes, and how to box out on the shot are just a few points of emphasis that Baranczyk focuses on.

5-0 Break

Transition offense is a way for you to beat your opponent down the floor and look to get a quick bucket in the post.  With 2 post players running the floor, you see how Oklahoma gets into their high-low motion offense right from their secondary break options.  In 2 Outlets, Baranczyk has her players go down one way and look to score then adds a second box out and transition trip.  This simulates the flow of play and gives players a chance to build rhythm in the game.

4 Line Reversals

In 4 Line Reversals, players are going through their motion offense and the actions they are looking to score on.  In this segment, players are working on their cutting in the high low motion offense.  Post players are able to work on passing from the perimeter and then diving into the paint to get a dominant score in the paint.

5v0 Silent

In this demonstration of half court offense, players are learning to cut and play off of each other as they go through actions silently in the half court.  This is an excellent drill to teach players how to read what their teammates are doing.  Players cannot talk and have to work on once the initial action breaks down what they are doing after that.  This is a great way to teach offensive flow and decision-making.

Player Development Drills

With over 45 minutes of player development drills designed to get your post player open and a quick bucket around the rim - from backdoor finishes to post seals - these drills will improve the basketball IQ of your post players and make them tough to guard in the paint.  Baranczyk jumps into the passing drills and provides passes that are both easy to catch and make your post players go get the ball so they have to work their way back into the paint and score through contact.  Using breakdown drills for the high low motion also gives your players a chance to make quick decisions and learn to read where the open players are.

5v5 Play

Putting everything together, Baranczyk has her players get up and down the floor in 5v5 play.  What separates this segment from other 5v5 plays is allowing your players to make reads within the offense.  The up and down action creates a learning environment where players are not afraid to make mistakes and look for better reads.  Coach works on teaching decision-making in live play helping players raise their basketball IQ for game day.

Offseason is where mistakes are made and learning takes place.  Being able to make decisions and reads within your offensive system creates confidence and puts players in a position to be successful.  Coach Baranczyk does an excellent job detailing and teaching players what the correct options are to look for both on the offensive and defensive end.  This Open Practice video is one you will want to add to your collection helping guide your players in their decision making.
