Zone defenses are tough to play against. Teams must focus and put in extra practice time on that one opponent’s zone defense rather than spend time working on the skill and offensive development to improve their team.

Lee Wimberley, the head boy’s coach at Manila High School (AR), has been extremely successful utilizing his tough-to-beat 1-3-1 Gap Defense. Taking pieces of different zone defenses, Coach Wimberly has utilized this unique style of defense to win the 2023 Arkansas State Championship (the school’s first in 50 years), 6 conference championships, 3 district championships and 2 Regional championships in just 11 seasons.

Coach Wimberley has built a powerful defensive style of play that has defined a championship culture within his program. In this on-the-court instructional video, he showcases all the ins and outs of the 1-3-1 Gap Defense – while utilizing a highly effective combination of on-court drills, practice session demonstrations, film breakdown and an informative PowerPoint presentation to show you how his defensive works, how to implement it with your own team and offers tips and strategies on the best ways to teach it to your players.

1-3-1 Defense: Philosophy & How It Works

There are many reasons why a 1-3-1 defense is an excellent defensive system to add to your team. Coach Wimberley begins his presentation by introducing the 1-3-1 defense as a concept and describes how his version of it can be used to take away today’s popular Dribble Drive Motion Offense all while making your opponent prepare specially just for your game.

Coach Wimberley also illustrates the reasons why his 1-3-1 Gap Defense is a bit different from most other 1-3-1 zones and how this system allows you to dictate the pace of play in games, as well as informs you where most of your opponent’s shots are going to come from.

Coach Wimberley takes time to explain the roles and responsibilities of the different positions within his 1-3-1 Gap Defense and describes the perfect type player for each spot within this 1-3-1 system.

From positioning players who are the most athletic at the top to force traps, deflections, and turnovers, to describing how the point guard runs the baseline for easy outlets after rebounds, Wimberly offers in-depth descriptions on what it takes to contain your opponent and force them to shoot from where ‘you allow them to’ on the floor.

1-3-1 Gap Defense Break-Down Drills

Using break-down drills, Coach Wimberley showcases how to teach your players to learn the best ways to move in straight lines and make sure ball handlers cannot escape or dribble out of a corner trap.

In a terrific ‘6-on-5 Disadvantage Drill,’ Wimberley demonstrates how this drill places your defense in an outnumbered disadvantage situation and forces them to sprint from spot to spot on the floor to contain the ball. This drill conditions your players and challenges them in practice, which makes game situations feel easier than practices.

In the ‘Square Drill,’ your 5 player learns to play above your opponent’s post players from the high-post to mid-post area, while in the ‘Spine Drills,’ Coach Wimberley showcases how wings and post players learn their rotations as the ball is swung from side to side, staying on the lookout for dribble penetration options.

The drills Wimberley highlights in this section make up the core of your defensive work within the 1-3-1 Gap Defense and helps to improve your players ability to anticipate where the ball is moving next.

Special Situations

No zone defense is complete without understanding how to defend during the special situations that occur during games. Coach Wimberley shows you how to defend baseline out-of-bounds sets and flow right back into the 1-3-1 while using aggressive traps to surprise your opponent in the half court.

Wimberley showcases a variety of different situations your players will need to prepare for, as well as shows you how the 1-3-1 Gap Defense flows from your go-to transition defense and also stops an aggressive up-tempo offense.

Coach Wimberley builds you a complete and dynamic defensive package with this 1-3-1 Gap Defense video presentation!

Wimberley’s video will equip you with a comprehensive understanding of a dynamic/lockdown 1-3-1 Gap Defense that’s designed to keep all of your opponents on their toes! Best of all, you can use it to thwart all the varieties of the Dribble-Drive Motion Offense that so many teams love to run in today’s game. Be sure to add this zone defense to your program’s arsenal and compete against the best teams you’ll face in the seasons ahead!

Customer Review: 5 Out of 5 Stars. ‘This is a GREAT breakdown video. Coach Wimberley builds a complete defensive package and does an excellent job of explaining his philosophy and all the details of how the 1-3-1 Gap Defense works, as well as the best way to teach it!’
