A big part of coaching basketball is how you teach your players how to play. Longtime Maryland head coach Brenda Frese has built a program that focuses on teaching and reinforcing player fundamentals and simple skills.
The Terrapins' run to the National Championship in 2006 was a showcase of all the fundamental skills her players mastered in her practices. Coach Frese brings you inside two practice sessions where you can watch her team practicing the drills and skills that define her program. Each drill is introduced by a member of her staff and she will break down the focus they are trying to teach. You will love how packed this video is with drills and find several that you will want to add to your practices!
Practice 1
In this hour-long session, players are getting lots of reps and shots. These shooting drills are great for your players to communicate together and look for the one more pass or let a teammate know where you are on the floor. In Triangle Shooting, players are constantly communicating where they are on the floor and sprinting in transition. This is an excellent drill that contributes to great conditioning for players too.
In Finish at the Rim Drill, players are working on different finishes to help them score around the rim. Using a defender to simulate contact and contest a finish, players have to catch, read the defender, and use a move to score around the rim with defense.
In the Drive and Kick series, Coach Frese and staff are working on driving actions within their half court offense. Players are looking for open gaps to drive and using different types of passes to kick out to the perimeter for a shot or one more pass. This drill is a must to add to your program if you are looking to teach drive and kick reads.
Practice 2
In Get Open Drill, players are learning the footwork they need to get open against a tough defender. By creating contact and using a v-cut to get separation, players are learning how to hit the outside hand in an overplay. This drill is one that will help improve your players ability to get open, create space, and attack a tough defender. It will help your players practice and improve the critical fundamentals needed within your offense and keep the ball moving.
Transition play is a big part of Coach Frese's offense; they use a variety of drills to help teach their transition game and build the skills needed to score and find the open player in transition. In 3 Man Weave Box Outs, players are getting up shots in transition while the other two players are boxing each other out and fighting for an offensive rebound. This is a great drill to teach players how to get around a tough box out. In 5-4-3 Transition, players have to weave down and back in transition using a certain number of passes. They have to focus on catching and getting to a jump stop to avoid traveling while making sure they deliver a great pass. This will help your transition game and build your players passing and catching in the open court skills.
Coach Frese has built a program whose success is predicated upon all players possessing sound fundamentals and continually refining and improving their mastery of them. In this Open Practice drill video, you will get to see the drills in 2 live practice sessions that have helped her build a consistently solid, sound foundation of skills within her players that build confidence and resilience when they face competition. You will find a drill for just about any skill you want to work on in this video!
