Does your team struggle to produce baskets occasionally? Are you always looking for a way to get a bucket to stop your opponent's runs? This on-court video featuring Greg Kampe may be the tool you need to produce more baskets when you need them!
Through terrific teaching and entertaining dialogue, Kampe opens up his playbook and shares some of his best quick hitters. From plays to get you open 3-pointers to looks that will generate great post-ups, Kampe gives you what you need to score verses any defense.
He also adds a unique twist to defending ball screens. While special "tricks" like this usually don't lead to consistent success, Kampe's team proved this method isn't a trick as his team was ranked No. 1 in the nation in 2018 against ball screen offense.
Guarding the Ball Screen
While the technique Coach Kampe shares isn't the "normal" look verses ball screens, it has proven to work. Ball screen defense - all defense for that matter - starts with communication. Kampe shows how his team defends ball screens when the ball is on top and also explains how he handles ball screens a bit differently when they're set on the wing. As players get into the action, you can immediately see how and why this philosophy works.
Labeling Shooters
Analytics have changed the game of basketball in terms of running different offenses, and more importantly, how to defend as a team. Labeling shooters and understanding where they make shots will impact how you defend the ball screen.
Kampe's defense is designed to stay with shooters, and hedge/close out if the offensive player isn't a good shooter. The goal is to force the defense into a low percentage shot.
Quick Hitters
While his teams have always been known for an up-tempo offense, Coach Kampe has over 100 plays that he uses to create opportunities in the half-court. In this video, he passes on many of these plays, but also shows how simple terminology can help your players grasp things faster, even in his high-tempo style of play.
Coach Kampe starts out the Bunch series. This group of plays offers up multiple options that allow each player on the team to have a play that can get them a look in their prime spot. Bunch Corner is a staple play that offers great options and is sure to get someone on your team a great look.
The Choice series provide looks from behind the arc, inside the paint, and via drives. Each play is taught 5-on-0 and then run 5-on-5 to show how the defense reacts and the counters that are available. Kampe stresses that being disciplined running the plays is the key to their success. If players follow the rules of each play, they should find an opening to score.
Greg Kampe brings his energy and enthusiasm for the game to the court and passes on some valuable information on both defense and offense. His ball screen defensive philosophy is a bit different, but has proven to be quite successful. Meanwhile, the quick hitting plays included in this video are sure to create great opportunities for your players to score.
