Coaches know that players win games. With this knowledge, comes the responsibility to prep and drill players to help them become the best that they can be. The 2019 Big XII Champion coach Bruce Weber knows a thing or two about player development and winning big games. In this video, Coach Weber shares his most productive drills used for this purpose - developing your players! In this instructional coaching video, Weber deep-dives into critical important basketball areas, such as:

  • Insight into coaching development
  • Keys to creating an efficient offense
  • Multiple shooting drills
  • Transition offense and defensive drills
  • Proven, set plays that work

Thoughts on Coaching, Teaching Offense

Coach Weber begins things by discussing his coaching origins, which began with his career as a teacher; he discusses the importance of planning and being efficient as a basketball coach. Weber stresses the importance of continually learning as a coach and sharing that knowledge with others as your career progresses. He advises young coaches to watch others coach, stressing that it helps to be in person so you can get a better feel for the flow of their practices, as well as how they go about developing relationships with their players.

Throughout his career, Weber explains, he has tried to learn from as many coaches at as many levels as possible and draw on these experiences to develop as a coach. From these observations, he learned how to fit a variety of drills with the offense and defense you run. He also explains how this process has refined his concepts for building the best offense for his players.

Coach Weber discusses the tenets of a good offense and other things you should consider when designing your offense. He advises that you ask several critically important questions, such as: Does the offense that you want to run fit your players’ ability? Does it allow for some player freedom? Does it provide you with defensive balance and rebounding responsibilities? If you can answer those questions honestly – then you are on your way to developing a potent offense.

Warmup and Shooting Drills

Next, Coach Weber showcases a variety of drills that are great to start practice with and also help to work on player conditioning. He begins by showing a fast-break drill that’s designed to get players sprinting, talking with one another and pushing the ball up and down the floor right off the bat to begin practice. Adding an element of time into this drill adds competitive fire and a layer of pressure that helps your players be ready for your next opponent.

Weber believes it is important to have drills that are for bulk shooting – advising that those drills be player specific and include motion shots. He showcases several drills, including the ‘Motion-Cuts Drill’ and ‘Reggie Miller Drill’ that get players moving and putting up shots in game spots. The coach also explains why utilizing timed shooting drills is also a good way to get players working on the different types of shots they’ll take during games, as well as helps them with their conditioning.

Fast Break, 5-on-5 Continuity Transition & Set Plays

Coach Weber says that no practice is complete without transition drills and segments that involve 5-on-5 action. Weber reiterates the importance of selecting drills that get players working on both sides of the ball to prepare them for games and help them with their conditioning, but he also covers how effective drills teach them how to play. Weber also shares his ‘5-on-5, Continuity-Transition Drill’  - a great way to teach motion concepts to players while they are running at full speed.

To round out the video, Weber shares a few of his favorite set plays that gets the ball into the hands of your best shooters and shows an end-of-the-game play that is sure to steal you an extra victory during the season.

This video is great for coaches at all levels of competition and provides you with a plethora of information that is sure to give you an edge next season and helps to make sure your players are ready to compete all season long!
