Coach Bruce Weber is a mastermind on defense! His teams are almost always at the top of their league when it comes to defensive efficiency. In this video, you will get a taste of why they are so successful on the defensive end. You'll get drills for all aspects of defense, including:

  • Closeouts
  • Ball screens
  • Disadvantage drills
  • Transition defense
  • Shell drill and variations

Team Defense Drills

Throughout the video, Coach Weber reiterates his coaching drill philosophy on defensive responsibilities, IQ, and toughness. These three things are always on display as he discusses the importance of technique, habits, and toughness within the drills that they do.

Coach Weber goes into some of his favorite team drills that build toughness and promote playing hard. Closeout drills are shown to help players work on the technique of a good closeout and then play off the pass and dribble. The 3-on-4 Scramble Drill will instill playing with toughness and intensity as the defense has a disadvantage and must cover the floor and finish with a box-out and rebound. The Superman drill will help you find your toughest defender, as one player tries to get three stops in a row against three different offensive players.

While instilling the habits and techniques of guarding the ball screen, Weber shows the Mascot Drill. This is a great drill to work on different ball screen coverages within one continuous drill, guarding a drag screen, side ball screen, and a step-up screen.

One of the most important aspects of defense is transition. Coach Weber shows his Rush Drill, which has his team go three trips guarding in the half court to transition defense. This can also be adapted to practice your zone defense as well.

Shell Drills

The tried and true Shell drill is a staple of almost every basketball practice across the country! Coach Weber shows the traditional technique of the 4-on-4 Shell drill and how his team guards interchanges, down screens, and flare screens. He shows multiple variations of how to make your Shell drill competitive. One way is through the Gut Check drill, which will incorporate the losing team running a sprint and having to transition back to defense while attempting to get a determined number of stops or shutouts.

Rounding out the video, Weber details the Play Hard drill. This is a single-person drill where that works on denials, jumping to the ball, taking a charge, and diving after a loose ball. This will up the energy and intensity of any practice. Finally, Coach Weber finishes by showing a quick hitter and a counter that will get your best player a quick bucket when needed.

It is said defense wins championships. Any good defense will give any team a fighting chance. These great drills from Coach Weber will bring high intensity, energy, and toughness into your practices and translate into great defense come game day!
