Skills Trainer at Pure Sweat Basketball;
Founder of Top Tier Basketball;
former collegiate player at Lindenwood University

One of the most commonly used actions in basketball is the ball screen. Used at nearly all levels, the ball screen has become synonymous with the sport. With that said, what makes the ball screen so effective? The answers are many, but the fact of the matter is the ability of players to execute the ball screen action is what makes all the difference.

Michael Boos, founder of Top Tier Basketball and former Pure Sweat skills trainer, shares with you nine drills he uses to teach players how to use ball screens effectively. He shows you how to freeze the defender, how to create a mismatch by getting the switch on a ball screen, and how to use the screener in ball screen situations.

Setting Up the Ball Screen

Coach Boos gives you the five ways that he teaches players to set up ball screens. You will see how the screener can be used on the primary screen and how they can be used in re-screen situations. You'll also see:

  • How to get the ball handler to create deception with their eyes.
  • How to get separation from a defender if they are quicker than you.
  • The use of the "pound & pop" to freeze the defender and blow past them.
  • How to use the shift, AKA "the baby inside out", to run them off a screen.

Decision Making Using the Ball Screen

Players must be decision makers. Using four universal ball screen decision making choices (the refusal, splitting the screen, turning downhill and creating the switch), you will see how to get players to use ball screens effectively.

You will also learn:The Refusal: See why you want players to think refusal of a screen first to fool the defense.Splitting the Screen: How to split before and after the screen.Turning Downhill: How to use a "quick evade" move to avoid getting pushed east and west by a defender.Creating the Switch: See how to get an opposing big switched onto a guard.

You will feel reinvigorated to teach the ball screen to your players and have the tools and teaching points to create an unstoppable ball screen attack! No matter what ball screen system you use or drills you use to teach it, you can use the details from Coach Boos to unleash your players and counter almost any way to guard ball screens.
